Governance-Driven Development

Regulatory obligations as formal inputs to AI software development workflows

In development

Overview

Regulatory compliance and product development are often treated as separate tracks: compliance as overhead layered onto development work, managed by a different team on a different timeline. My workflow integrated AI governance framework "Governance-Driven Development" (GDD) challenges that separation.

Regulatory obligations under the EU AI Act and ISO 42001 are structurally similar to development specifications: they define what a system must do, not how to build it. GDD treats them as such, feeding obligations into AI-facilitated planning and implementation cycles. The goal is a workflow where compliance is a byproduct of building a well-specified system, rather than a separate task that competes for the same resources.

I am actively developing the framework through my work at Augmented Industries and completed a first pilot there in Q2 2026. External validation with additional organisations is the planned next step.
